The Garden Route gets rain in every season, not only in winter like Cape Town. Heavy cloud weakens the satellite signal, so a dish that is only just on target drops out first. Water also finds its way into old twist-on connectors and cable joints. We align every dish with a meter, use sealed compression connectors and fit a larger dish where the signal needs the margin.
Trees are the other problem. Gardens in Knysna, Wilderness, Sedgefield and parts of George are full of tall trees, and the dish needs a clear view to the north-east. On the coast at Mossel Bay, Brenton and Keurboomstrand, salt and wind are the issue, so we use galvanised or stainless brackets there. Over the mountain in Oudtshoorn it is heat and sun, and cheap cable cracks within a few summers.
